Car Trouble

August 28th, 2008 at 10:20 pm

Ever since I graduate in May, I have been thinking about getting a new car. My current car isn't in bad shape, but it seems to constantly need minor repairs here and there. Whenever I fix something, there always seems to be another minor thing that I need to fix.

The main benefit a new car would give me is reliability, since it would have a 5 year warranty. It also doesn't hurt my self-confidence to drive around a new car.

I went to the Toyota dealership a couple weeks ago and test drove a new Corolla S. I really liked the style, gas mileage and reliability. But didn't want to make payments for 5 years, so I decided to fix up my car ($550) and ride it out.

This week, I started feeling vibrations out of my front tires. Today, I took it into the mechanics and they told me some wheel bearing or something is deteriorated and would cost around $1k to fix. If I don't fix it, it may lead to other things breaking.

So, I'm in a dilemma. Either I spend a grand to fix my car (after just paying 550 for my brakes) and hope it will last another year w/out repairs. Or, sell this headache (probably around $3K) and start over with a brand new car, but have $350 monthly payments for 5 years.

I would weigh this one carefully I have actually purchased a 2009 Toyota Corolla recently and talk about reliability and gas milege. I travel 24 miles a day round trip to and from work I fill up my gas tank on thursday's (because that's the sale day at shell 5 cents off) and I drive out on the weekends and too and from work during the week and only make to 3/4 a tank its never empty on the following thursday. If you do consider toyota please ask about there special financing I was able to get financed at 0% and they also have 2.90% option as well but you have to ask in order to receive and I pay $290 for 5 years being silly only putting $2,000 down instead of $5,000 that I originally planned too. lol But it's worth it.

I was in the same situation for about 3 years I fixed little things on my car even had to fix the transmission but I did and then last year bought a new well used Camry and glad I did. I agree you should really look at the pros and cons very carefully, good luck

I was in the same situation as you a few months ago. Dropped about $1500 on my car in the months before I got rid of it. I had the water pump/timing belt done (pump gave out) and then traded the car in just a few days later. I couldn't deal with constantly repairing it and still knowing it needed so much more work done to it. I was not able to keep up on normal maintenance repairs due to the catastrophic repairs. Yes, I was fast headed towards paying more each month on repairs than a car payment would be! I wasn't happy with having to get rid of it just after paying more than $500 for the repair. I realized if I didn't cut my losses NOW, I was never going to get away from that car. It took a lot of stress away from me. Just weigh out this decision carefully for yourself. Good luck!
